Carolina is the state where the first successful
controlled and powered flight occured, achieved
by the Wright brothers in 1903, at the Kill
Devil Hills. This is where the state motto,
"First in Flight" came to exist, as well as the
frontier offered and started on by these
pioneering brothers. Due to the state's location
next to the Atlantic Ocean, the majority of the
area falls under the humid, subtropical climate.
The land is made up of 3 major geographic
regions, which are the coastal plains, the
Appalachian Mountains and the Piedmont.
There are a number of major airports in the
state, such as the
Albert J Ellis Airport in
Jacksonville, the Asheville Regional Airport and
the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport.
